TELELIBRAS
Vez da Voz (Voice Opportunity) releases a news program
in Libras (Língua Brasileira de Sinais – Brazilian Sign Language).
The NGO Vez da Voz frequently interacts with visual, hearing, physical
or mental-disabled people focusing to find out their real needs. The beginning
of this interaction has led the members of this NGO to develop one more
all-embracing project: Telelibras – the first specially
designed news program on Internet which brodcasts information about what
is happening in Brazil and in the whole world for hearing-disabled people
as well as abled people who might be interested in learning Libras.
A host and an interpreter share the same space on screen pointing out that all of us are equal despite our differences.
According to the last census realized by the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE – Brazilian Geography and Statistics Institute) there are more than 5.7 million people with hearing-related problems today. 166,000 of them are unable to hear and only 15% of this group can understand Portuguese.
Objectives of Telelibras:
To promote the access to journalistic information for hearing-disabled people;
To build a democratic and all-embracing media policy in which everyone has the right of information independently of any differences.
The right of information has existed before the practice of the Human Rights. The UN (United Nations) emphasizes that the right to information and communication is fundamental. They are essential for exercising the citizenship.
